Former GOP presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) has fueled speculation on Donald Trump’s running mate selection after comments he made on Newsmax.

During an interview with Newsmax host Eric Bolling, Scott discussed the upcoming debates between Trump and Joe Biden announced this week.

“Senator, I would love to moderate a debate with you but I have a hunch that there might be a vice presidential debate, and I don’t know, maybe Kamala Harris will be debating Senator Tim Scott on that one,” Bolling commented.

“I hear there’s a debate in July. If you’re the guy moderating, maybe I’ll be talking to you. We’ll see what happens,” Scott said.

Bolling asked Scott if he will be Trump’s running mate.

“Is it you?” he asked.

“We’ll see. We’ll see,” Scott replied.

From the New York Post:

Trump and President Biden have agreed to two head-to-head debates, one on June 27 and another on Sept. 10. Biden’s campaign has also proposed having a VP debate in July, but an agreement on the timing has not been announced.

Scott has long been reported as a top contender in the 45th president’s veepstakes, with one source telling The Post last month the senator was doing “everything he can to build his relationship with Donald Trump in an attempt to get picked as VP.”

Trump, 77, has said he will reveal his choice closer to the Republican National Convention, slated to be held July 15-18 in Milwaukee, and has spoken positively about several possible candidates.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, who is also reported to be in the running, told The Post on Saturday that Trump had recently claimed to a gathering of his supporters at Mar-a-Lago that there are 50 candidates in play.

But Scott — a former 2024 presidential contender who dropped out of the race in November — has repeatedly been singled out for special praise by Trump.

“He’s a much better representative for me than he is a representative for himself,” Trump said of Scott at a campaign rally in South Carolina earlier this year. “And it’s true. And that’s a great compliment. And you know why? Because he’s a high-quality person. He doesn’t like talking about himself.”

Scott was among the attendees at a Mar-a-Lago event earlier this month.

The attendees included several names rumored to be high on Trump’s list of VP candidates.

Per The Hill:

Former President Trump held a private lunch event at his Mar-a-Lago resort over the weekend that hosted many top GOP donors and high-profile party leaders.

The fundraiser was largely seen as an audition for Trump’s vice president within the GOP. The guest list included many of those who are rumored to be on that list, including South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R), North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R), Ohio Sen. JD Vance (R), House GOP conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

The weekend kicked off with Stefanik, along with Trump’s daughter-in-law and Republican National Committee (RNC) co-Chair Lara Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), hosting a welcome reception on Friday, according to CNN.

Trump reportedly called some of those on his VP shortlist to the stage, except for Noem, who left early, NBC reported. She has been under controversy after an anecdote in her book about killing her dog went viral.

Trump, however, highlighted Stefanik, praising her as “an amazing talent,” according to CNN. He also said Rubio was doing a great job.

Other high-profile GOP leaders also attended the private event, such as Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) and Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.)
