A lot of questions are swirling around 22-year-old Harrisburg, PA resident June Riley-Williams, who was seen aggressively directing traffic inside the Capitol building during the siege. In a widely circulated video, a young, militant, woman wearing glasses, a bright green t-shirt, and a long brown jacket can be seen shouting, “Up the stairs!” and “Go!”amidst the chaos. Williams, who has been accused of entering Speaker Pelosi’s office and stealing her laptop, was not wearing Trump gear, and so far, her reason for being inside the Capitol building is not yet clear. According to federal authorities, her former boyfriend claims the 22-year-old was planning to sell Pelosi’s laptop to Russian intelligence services.
The Philadelphia Enquirer reports – Riley June Williams, a 22-year-old employee of a home health care agency, was among dozens of people charged since Friday in the FBI’s nationwide hunt for insurrectionists that participated in the attack.
Williams’ story, though, has given investigators particular cause for concern given the possibility that the laptop she is accused of stealing could contain sensitive information and questions over whether she actually has the means to carry out her purported plan to send it to Russia.
In an affidavit filed late Sunday evening, agents said that her former partner contacted them several times last week after recognizing her in footage shot during the Capitol siege by the British network ITV.
Her ex also claimed to have seen a video of Williams filching the laptop from Pelosi’s office and claimed she had bragged she intended to send it to a friend in Russia who would arrange for its transfer to the SVR, the Russian equivalent of the CIA.
The British news network, ITV, visited Williams’ mother at her Harriburg, PA apartment. She positively identified her daughter as the young woman in the bright green t-shirt inside the Capitol. Her mother, who was speaking to the reporter from behind a door inside the apartment she shares with her daughter June, admits that she is confused about her daughter’s behavior. “She’s actually gone,” she told the reporter adding, “She took off because of that,” telling him that neither the police or FBI have contacted her. Her mother said she never talked about which side of the political aisle she’s on, but doesn’t believe her daughter was assuming a leadership role in the Capitol building.
“It appears that WILLIAMS has fled,” according to the affidavit. “According to local law enforcement officers in Harrisburg, WILLIAMS’ mother stated that WILLIAMS packed a bag and left her home and told her mother she would be gone for a couple of weeks.
Williams has not been charged with theft.
