NEW: High school track runner gets attacked with a baton in the middle of a relay at the VSHL Class 3 State Indoor Championships.

Kaelen Tucker was on the second leg of the 4x200m relay at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, when she got smacked in the head.

Tucker suffered a concussion and a potential skull fracture.

“When we got to the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and when we got off the curve I finally passed her and that was when she hit me with the baton,” Tucker said.

The girl’s mother said neither the runner nor the coach apologized for the incident.

It’s unclear if Trucker will file charges.

From the New York Post:

Tucker – who had earned silver in the girl’s 55m dash earlier in the meet – was attempting to cut into lane one during a battle for second place in the front pack as she was rounding turn four.

Instead of blocking her entry, Tucker’s opponent — who attended IC Norcom High School — seemingly slowed down, wound up her arm back and smacked the baton across the Brookville runner’s head, according to a video of the incident.

“When we get onto the other side of the track we have to cross to lane one, you have to merge in, and as I was coming up on her she kind of made me get cut off a little bit so I backed away,” Tucker explained to WSLS.

“When we got to the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and when we got off the curve I finally passed her and that was when she hit me with the baton.”

An audible gasp was heard from the crowd inside the Lynchburg, Va. complex as Tucker detoured off the track, grabbing her head and falling to the ground.

Tucker’s mother and team trainers rushed to the ailing high schooler’s side.

WSLS reports:

While nothing was officially diagnosed at the meet, Kaelen could already feel the effects of the baton.

A trip to the doctor only confirmed those effects.

“I could feel like a headache coming up, so I just sat out,” Kaelen said. “I recently went to the doctor, and they prescribed me with a concussion and a possible fractured skull.”

Now, Tamarro and Keith are looking for an apology. They already reached out to the I.C. Norcom Athletic Director and the father of the opposing athlete.

While they appreciated their apology, Tamarro feels like the apology should be coming from the opposing coach and athlete who hit Kaelen.

“They were beside us at the event. They were watching the video at the event, but no one apologized or came to check on her,” the Tuckers said. “Even if it was a fluke or freak accident, you still would check on her.”

They reached out to the Virginia High School League as well, who told them that they were currently investigating the situation.

WSLS 10 has reached out to the VHSL, who told us in an email that “we don’t comment on individuals or disciplinary actions. The actions taken by the meet director were appropriate and correctly applied.” The situation is still being reviewed and is being called “a serious issue, especially when it involves the safety of athletes in competitions.”
