On Saturday, a 34-year-old Border Patrol Intel Agent Jose Mercado died suddenly due to an “unexpected and sudden heart attack.”

In a Twitter post, former Texas Rep. Mayra Flores (R) announced the agent’s death and offered her condolences to Mercado’s family.

“My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Border Patrol Intel Agent, Jose Mercado. He was assigned to RGV Sector in Edinburg, Texas. He passed away yesterday of a sudden heart attack. Keep his family in your prayers.”

Mercad, aka “Merc,”  served as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent for 14 years, according to the Go Fund Me page that has been set up for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie Mercado, and their three children.

Veronica Medina, the organizer of the Go Fund Me page, wrote a brief tribute to Mercado, saying, “All those who knew Jose Mercado aka as “Merc” both personally and professionally will express just how much of an amazing human being he was.”

“He was a great person with an enormous heart,” wrote Medina. “The type of person who got along with everyone, people could depend on, welcomer of the group, and was always willing to help others in the time of need. He will be deeply missed by all he [sic] knew him.”
