A shooting at a DMV facility near Wilmington, Delaware, resulted in the death of a state trooper.

The suspect is also deceased.

“We are closely monitoring the situation at the DMV in New Castle, and I want to be clear that there is no active threat to the public at this time. Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased,” Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer said.

“State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts. Please avoid the area and follow guidance from authorities. We will share updates as they are confirmed,” he added.

On Tuesday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m., dozens of police and first responder vehicles crowded the area around the DMV. Video footage streaming inside the office showed police officers in tactical gear walking around.

The surveillance video is typically used as a way to gauge how busy the DMV is.

Troopers are usually stationed Delaware DMV locations for security purposes, but the number of officers seen on camera was well above what is typical at the specific New Castle office.

“Video shows officers rushing to the scene as gunshots can be heard,” Rawsalerts wrote.

Video from inside the facility shows what appears to be a bullet hole in a window.

It’s not known if shots were fired from inside the DMV or if the shots came from the outside.

Personal items could be seen scattered inside.

It’s not known whether the trooper was stationed at the DMV, or responded to the report of a shooting.

The names of those involved have not been released.

Police are asking residents to avoid the area.
