FRISCO, Texas – Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III, 38, was found dead in his Frisco apartment on Wednesday. This is the NFL’s second loss this week after 25-year-old Jeff Gladney died in a tragic car crash early Monday morning.

Barber’s cause of death is currently unknown.

Police were reportedly responding to a welfare check at Barber’s apartment after someone called about a water leak. Upon arrival, police forced their way into the apartment where they found Barber’s body.

“Frisco Police responded to a welfare concern at an apartment believed to be leased by Marion Barber,” said police spokesperson Joshua Lovell. “Frisco Police along with the Colin County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating an unattended death at the location.”

Barber played in the NFL for seven years, six of which were spent playing for the Cowboys.

His former team released a statement following the tragic news:

“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III. Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
