How in the world could a graphic of an American flag be considered “aggressive”?

Well, that’s exactly what citizens of Laguna Beach, CA are saying.

According to the LA Times, the decision to put an American flag graphic on the police cars is causing controversy and dividing the community. Some residents are giving it a thumbs up and others are saying it’s too “aggressive” to visitors and “immigrants”. Huh? Do Americans have to tone down their patriotism so as not to offend someone who is here as a “visitor”?

The city officials have now agreed to reconsider their decision to put the graphic on the Laguna Beach Police Department squad cars.

The City Council will take up the issue next week but Councilman Peter Blake weighed in with this comment:

“People are screaming that the American flag on a police car is somehow or another … hurting people’s feelings who might be immigrants or visitors. People are actually ridiculous enough to bring up comments about our cop cars having American flags on them.”

Artist Carrie Woodburn had previously spoken at the first City Council meeting saying of the flag graphic that it was “shocking to see the boldness of the design”. Woodburn continued, “We have such an amazing community of artists here, and I thought the aesthetic didn’t really represent our community…It feels very aggressive.”

Attorney Jennifer Welsh Zeiter claimed the objection had more to do with dislike for President Trump:

“They are so filled with hatred toward this…office of the president of the United States and the current occupant of that office, that they cannot see through their current biases to realize that a police vehicle with the American flag is the ultimate American expression.”
