Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill recently that calls for civics education to be expanded in Florida, including teaching that communism is evil. And you thought you couldn’t like him more?

The expanded civics instruction will be about communist governments and totalitarian governments. Governor DeSantis says kids need to be taught about the evils of these types of governments in civics class. and why people risk everything to come to America:

“Why would somebody flee across shark-infested waters, say leaving from Cuba, to come to southern Florida? Why would somebody leave a place like Vietnam? Why would people leave these countries and risk their life to be able to come here? DeSantis said. ”It’s important that students understand that.”

According to the AP, Gov. DeSantis signed three bills:  Two dealt with civics education, and the other guaranteed freedom of expression at state universities especially preventing the universities from censoring conservative ideology.

Development of a Kindergarten-12th grade civics curriculum including “portraits in patriotism” would be included.  Also, state university students and high school students will have to take a civic literacy assessment exam.

Governor DeSantis also signed a third bill that protects free speech at state universities, especially the speech of conservative students, so schools can’t shield students from hearing ALL opinions:

“It used to be thought that a university campus was a place where you’d be exposed to a lot of different ideas. Unfortunately, now, the norm is really these are more intellectually repressive environments. You have orthodoxies that are promoted, and other viewpoints are shunned or even suppressed. We don’t want that in Florida.”
