Anthony Fauci, former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), was hospitalized due to West Nile Virus, a spokesperson revealed.

Fauci, 83, is recovering at home.

“Tony Fauci has been hospitalized with a case of West Nile virus. He is now home and is recovering. A full recovery is expected,” the spokesperson said, according to The Guardian.

“Only about 1,000 people are hospitalized with the most severe form of West Nile Virus each year—which can spread to the brain & nervous system, can cause brain swelling, brain damage and even death,” Texas Lindsay noted.

Per The Guardian:

Fauci retired from his role at the NIH in 2022 after achieving widespread recognition for his role in public health communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. He now serves as a distinguished professor at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine.

Despite his retirement from the NIH, House Republicans in June called Fauci for a heated hearing about his response to Covid-19. Republican lawmakers accused Fauci of covering up the origins of the virus. Fauci said the claims were “simply preposterous”.

Fauci told Congress at the time that he and his family still receive death threats. In 2022, a man was sentenced to three years in federal prison after sending a series of emails threatening Fauci and his family.

“While 80 % of infected individuals are asymptomatic, 20% are not. Those who are immunosuppressed are known to have much worse outcomes after contracting the disease… Enquiring minds want to know, how many mRNA boosters has Dr. Fauci had?” Dr. Robert Malone wrote.

“There are no vaccines to prevent West Nile, or medicines to treat it. As of Aug. 20, the CDC had recorded 216 cases in 33 states this year. It’s best prevented by avoiding mosquito bites,” the Associated Press wrote.

From the Associated Press:

While most people don’t experience symptoms, about 1 in 5 can develop a fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.

CBS News’ chief medical correspondent, Dr. Jonathan LaPook, wrote in a social media post that he spoke Saturday with Fauci, who said he was likely infected from a mosquito bite that he got in his backyard.

“Dr. Fauci was hospitalized about ten days ago after developing fever, chills, and severe fatigue,” the post on X said. It said Fauci spent a week in the hospital.
