Bernie Sanders just made the Democratic Party’s civil war impossible to hide.
Asked whether the party had room for both veteran strategist James Carville and far-left streamer Hasan Piker, Sanders did not hesitate.
Carville could leave.
Sanders told CNN that if the longtime Clinton operative does not want to share a party with Piker and Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, he can “start his own party.”

Fox News reports that CNN’s Abby Phillip pressed Sanders on which man he would choose after Carville vowed he would not remain in a party where Piker became a force. Sanders called it “not much of a choice,” defended Piker’s place in a Democratic big tent and pointed to El-Sayed’s primary victory over Rep. Haley Stevens as evidence that the party’s left wing is gaining power.
Sanders also defended Piker when Phillip raised the streamer’s notorious 2019 statement that America “deserved” the September 11 attacks. Sanders called the remark dumb but argued that Piker says many things that make sense to his large audience and should not be canceled over one statement.
Piker later said he did not literally mean America deserved the attack, describing the comment as criticism of U.S. foreign policy.
Carville’s objection is bigger than one internet personality.
He sees Piker as the public face of a movement pulling Democrats toward open socialism and communism.
And he has spent months warning that the party is walking into a general-election disaster.

The Christian Post reports that Carville issued his ultimatum on Fox News after El-Sayed’s Michigan campaign embraced Piker. Carville said he had no intention of belonging to the same political party as the streamer and predicted one of them would ultimately leave.
He pointed readers toward the Democratic Socialists of America platform and rejected a movement he described as pursuing government seizure of the means of production.
The report also details why Piker alarms even some Democrats. In a 2025 interview, Piker described communism as the “final goal” of socialism: a stateless, moneyless, classless and borderless society.
He said such a society has never existed, brushed off the communist label and called that destination an honorable goal. Piker was explaining his own politics in his own words.
Sanders heard Carville’s warning and chose Piker anyway.
That decision came one day after El-Sayed defeated Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary.
El-Sayed campaigned with Piker and appeared on his YouTube channel.
Sanders backed El-Sayed and used the victory to argue that the party should welcome activists who attack corporate money, cryptocurrency interests and American support for Israel.
Moderate Democrats understand the danger.
The center-left group Third Way told Fox News that Democrats lost the “battle of reasonableness” and warned that embracing extremism could hand Republicans a major Senate opportunity.
The group said swing-state voters already viewed Democrats as more extreme than Republicans after the 2024 campaign.
Its political nightmare is obvious.
Republicans do not need to invent a caricature when Democratic candidates appear beside a streamer who defended communism as an honorable end goal and once said America deserved 9/11.
They only need to play the clips.

There is one especially rich detail in Sanders claiming ownership of “my party.”
He is still officially an independent.
Sanders has spent decades using Democratic ballot lines, caucusing with Democratic senators and trying to move the party toward democratic socialism without formally joining it.
Now he is telling James Carville, one of the architects of Bill Clinton’s 1992 victory, that the door is over there.
Carville is no conservative.
He has proposed packing the Supreme Court and expanding Democratic power whenever his party regains control.
But even he sees a line between old-school liberalism and a movement that openly romanticizes communism, attacks the country and treats police, borders and capitalism as evils to be dismantled.
Sanders no longer seems interested in preserving that line.
The Democratic establishment spent years telling voters that warnings about socialism were Republican fearmongering.
Now its own leaders are fighting over whether a self-described communist sympathizer belongs at the center of the coalition.
President Trump does not have to manufacture the contrast.
