Today Joe Biden signed an order to prevent federal agencies from using any terms connecting the Coronavirus to China, including “Wuhan virus” or “Chinese virus”. This memo was released along with a series of memos, including one restricting the terms deemed acceptable for the CBP and ICE to use when referencing illegal immigrants.

The memo blames “the actions of political leaders” for “furthering xenophobic sentiments” against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, alluding to the rhetoric of the Trump era and indirectly blaming Trump for violence against Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities.

This adds to the collection of jabs at Trump that the Biden administration has made since being in office, among accusing him of causing the border crisis. During his time in office, Trump repeatedly referred to COVID as the “Chinese virus” or the “Wuhan virus”.

When criticized for his terminology and accused of being racist, Trump defended his word choice by saying, “It comes from China. It’s not racist at all.” Trump had also said that “China tried to say, at one point… that it was caused by American soldiers. That can’t happen, it’s not gonna happen, not as long as I’m president.” However, now that he is no longer in office, this rhetoric is once again being termed as racist and insensitive.

This is the second memo today from the Biden administration that aims to restrict American speech and change the rhetoric in a way that favors Leftist policies and ideas.
