In a tense press conference on Tuesday, Biden’s Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, refused to say if President Biden supports any restrictions on abortion after being questioned repeatedly by RealClearPolitics White House reporter Philip Wegmann.
Democrats running for Congress or the Senate in the 2022 midterm elections have either mostly refused to commit to restrictions on abortion or have in some cases said they do not support any restrictions on abortion.
In a recent CNN interview, Pennsylvania Senate candidate John Fetterman openly said that he did not believe in any restrictions on abortion, saying that it should be left to the woman and her doctor.
“Do you support ANY restrictions on abortion?”
FETTERMAN: “I don’t."
“Even in the third trimester?”

Republican Senate candidate J.D Vance has attacked Tim Ryan for voting for a bill that would allow abortion up until birth, making it one of the focal points of his campaign as Ryan has held himself out as a moderate during debates and in political advertisements.

“What the president is going to do, and wants to do and believes in doing is codifying Roe,” Jean-Pierre answered. “He believes that is what was law of the land, a constitutional right for almost 50 years and he believes, in its specific provisions, was rightly decided. He has said this regularly, including right after Dobbs, and that has not changed.”
“Right, but that didn’t answer either question. First of all, there are individual state restrictions on abortion in the books currently around the country,” Wegmann responded. “Some of those existed before the Dobbs case, before the overturn of Roe. Would the president, with this bill to codify Roe — does he want that bill to go farther?”
“I just answered that question, he believes in Roe and how it stood before the Dobbs decision,” she answered.
