The U.S. Capitol Building’s security footage from Jan. 6, 2021, has been hidden from the public for over two years. Now, according to GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has decided to release this footage to the public.

On Friday, Rep. Gaetz (R-Florida) told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson that McCarthy promised both Gaetz and Colorado Rep. Boebert that he would release the security footage in exchange for their support in his bid for House Speaker.

“The American people deserve to know the truth about what happened on January 6th,” Gaetz told Carlson. “We have demanded to see all the footage. Transparency is coming.”

“Every time – from the JFK files, to 9/11, to now January 6th – it’s our own government, our own Department of Justice that seems to stand in the way of transparency,” added the Florida Rep.

“The Speaker of the House is now fulfilling the commitment he made to us, and he deserves a great deal of credit for it,” Gaetz said.

Speaking to the press about releasing the footage, McCarthy explained that the American people should be able to view the full events from Jan 6 without a political agenda controlling which portions they see.

McCarthy assured the press that he would be “very thoughtful” about the footage he chooses to release, and said, “I think the American public should actually see all what happened instead of a report that’s written for political basis.”

On Saturday, Rep. Boebert tweeted, “Speaker McCarthy says he’ll be releasing ALL the footage from January 6th. Considering all the public has seen are edited clips from a bunch of Democrats with an axe to grind, it sure will be nice to get some unbiased footage.”

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) praised McCarthy’s decision, insisting that it will be crucial in boosting the Jan. 6 detainee’s legal defense.

“The defendants aren’t given the proper background to defend themselves. It has to happen. Absolutely. It has to happen,” Gosar told The Washington Times.

“Let’s set it free, and while we’re doing that, let’s get the tape with Ms.Pelosi in conversation with the Gen. [Mark A. Milley] and the Capitol Police,” added Gosar.
