A mass shooting occurred in Akron, Ohio, on early Sunday morning that resulted in 25 people being injured and taking the life of one person.

The Akron Police Department reported the shooting occurred shortly after midnight in the area of Kelly and 8th Avenue, where a block party was taking place.

One person was killed in the shooting, and the majority are in non-life threatening conditions, but authorities did note some were in critical condition.

No arrests have been made in the shooting, and an investigation is now underway.

One man is dead and more than 20 others left injured following an overnight mass shooting at a block party in Akron early Sunday morning.

The Akron Police Department responded to the area of Kelly and 8th Avenue for several reports of shots fired shortly after midnight.

“Shortly after those calls came in, the call center received notifications from local hospitals that multiple persons were arriving in the emergency departments with gunshot wounds,” according to Akron police.

Earlier Sunday morning, Akron police had said it was believed there were 27 total gunshot victims, but updated information released in a statement from Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding shortly after 10:30 a.m. Sunday clarified those details to say the total number of victims is 25 — including a 27-year-old man who has died.

“One firearm and several dozen casings have been recovered from the scene,” according to a press release from Akron police.

It is unclear what led to the shooting and no arrests have been made at this time.

Officers at the scene, near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue, discovered dozens of bullet casings and a gun, according to local media reports.

No one has been arrested or identified as a suspect and an investigation is under way, the Akron Police Department has confirmed.

In a statement to the BBC, the force said at least 25 people had been shot, one of whom had been killed.
It also confirmed many of the victims’ injuries were non-life-threatening, but added that some were in a “more serious condition”.
