A shocking family shooting has pulled Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy away from training camp.
Bieniemy’s wife, Mia, was shot multiple times Sunday night inside the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia.
She survived and was hospitalized in stable condition. Police say the suspect is the couple’s own 27-year-old son.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.
A USA Today NFL reporter noted that the charges carry potentially severe prison time:
If convicted on all three charges as filed, Bieniemy faces a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 33 years in prison.

ESPN reports that Loudoun County deputies responded to a home in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive at 7:32 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a shooting.
Authorities found a woman suffering from serious injuries caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Sources identified the victim as 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy and said she had been shot in the chest and arm.
Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond at a Loudoun County detention center. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 31.
Eric Bieniemy had been in St. Joseph, Missouri, with the Chiefs earlier Sunday for the team’s second training-camp practice. He left camp after the shooting and was not at Monday’s practice.
The Chiefs said the organization was aware of the incident involving Bieniemy’s family but did not release additional details.
Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year for a second stint as offensive coordinator. He previously held the job from 2018 through 2022, helping lead the Chiefs to two Super Bowl victories before coaching with the Washington Commanders and UCLA.
