President Trump signed an executive order today to ban all federal funding to gain-of-function virus research.

The order will cut off both present and future funding to gain-of-function research in countries like China and Iran.

It also orders agencies like the NIH to start looking into biological research that poses threats to public health and/or national security.

The White House’s Rapid Response 47 team broke down the specifics:

BREAKING: @POTUS just signed an executive order protecting Americans from dangerous gain-of-function research.

The order:

— Ends any present and all future Federal funding of dangerous gain-of-function research in countries of concern like China and Iran and in foreign nations deemed to have insufficient research oversight.

— Empowers American research agencies to identify and end Federal funding of other biological research that could pose a threat to American public health, public safety, or national security.

— Prohibits Federal funding from contributing to foreign research likely to cause another pandemic. These measures will drastically reduce the potential for lab-related incidents involving gain-of-function research, like that conducted on bat coronaviruses in China by the EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan Institute of Virology.

— Protects Americans from lab accidents and other biosecurity incidents, such as those that likely caused COVID-19 and the 1977 Russian flu.

Fox News reported:

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday banning all federal funding for “dangerous” gain-of-function research in China, Iran and other countries and blocking all federal funding for foreign research that could cause another pandemic.

The president signed the order Monday afternoon to improve the safety and security of biological research in the U.S. and around the world.

The White House said the order “will drastically reduce the potential for lab-related incidents involving gain-of-function research, like that conducted on bat coronaviruses in China by the EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

At its core, gain-of-function research is incredibly risky and dangerous. The process involves mutating a virus so that it more easily infects humans.

If the lab where that highly-infectious virus is kept leaks, then you can just imagine how disastrous that could be to the public.

That situation is exactly what is widely believed to have happened with COVID in 2020.

The New York Post explained:

The FBI, Energy Department and CIA — as well as former public health officials like onetime Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield — have all pointed to a lab leak as the most likely explanation for the outbreak that paralyzed the world in 2020.

Others, like former NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins and former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, have maintained that natural spillover from animals to humans is the most plausible explanation.

White House officials also dinged the Biden administration for allowing the possibly global-pandemic producing experiments that enhance the infectiousness of viruses and bacteria.

Additionally, all research with infectious pathogens and toxins will be paused until the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and national security adviser develop a new policy with enforcement and reporting requirements.

Biden had signed a ban on gain-of-function research in China and other countries of concern into law in December 2022, though secretaries of Health and Human Services were able to override that restriction pending review and upon notifying Congress.

Federal agencies have also been unable to track where all of the funding ends up.

Since SARS-CoV-2 emerged and went on to kill more than 1 million Americans, federal officials, lawmakers and scientific experts have debated whether it was a result of US-funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

The NIAID, then run by Fauci, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) funneled more than $1.4 million in grants and subawards through EcoHealth to the Chinese lab between 2014 and 2021 for a project titled “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence.”

That resulted in what ex-NIH principal deputy director Dr. Lawrence Tabak said were gain-of-function experiments at the WIV, though he and other officials have denied any direct link between the project and the COVID pandemic.

Stopping gain-of-function research in its tracks is essential to preventing another man-made pandemic (or bioweapon) from devastating humanity.

It’s something that really should have been done a long time ago.

HOLY SHIT WE DID IT

This was done in order to prevent future man-made pathogens from causing pandemics!
Gain-of-function research is the greatest current threat to the survival of humanity, and Trump and his administration are shutting it down!
ITS ACTUALLY HAPPENING!
