President Trump has just announced that the US will be taking ‘permanent control’ of the military security of Greenland.
He said it had to happen. And surprise, surprise — it did.
The news is just breaking, so here’s what we know.
One key ingredient to the new agreement apparently completely bars any US adversary from the region of Greenland.
That’s according to this post just put out by the White House on X:

I don’t know what the internal diplomatic discussions looked like…
But somehow, in true Trump fashion, he was able to convince both Greenland and their European overlords to give him what he wanted!
The President specified that the agreement addressed all the US national security concerns, as reported by Newsweek:
President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark to take “permanent control” over Greenland’s security and “all other needs.”
In a post on Truth Social, the president said the agreement addressed “ALL of our many U.S. concerns.” He added that the agreement came at no cost to the U.S.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump said.
The president went on to say the solution was “a great one” not just for Americans, but Greenlanders and the Danish, as well as other U.S. allies. Trump promised the U.S. would be protective of the “highly strategic” parcel of land, which is the 12th largest country in the world.
Here’s the announcement by the President on his Truth Social account:

Here’s the full text of that post from President Trump for easier reading:
BREAKING NEWS: I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. There will be NO COST to the United States! At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America. Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval. For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an “Infinite Life” Agreement, there is no end! We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People. We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction. This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land. We will be very protective of it! This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP
I don’t tend to rely heavily on outlets like NBC News on serious matters like this.
But I can’t help it — I have to share this clip if for no other reason than the context that the mainstream media is painting this in.
They can’t get away from treating the nature of the security threat that could come over the territory of Greenland as it pertains to the US as anything but SERIOUS.
Still, they end the segment almost questioning whether the agreement the President announced even exists!
Until Greenland and Denmark verify the agreement… Trump must be lying, right?
And then the anchors almost shrug off the entire thing, and end the segment as if this is just a huge nothing burger — after all, “The United States has had a military base there for a very long time already.”
Here’s that NBC News lamestream clip… just to give you ‘every side’ of this story:
I haven’t seen the actual agreement yet — it has yet to be made public.
But one of the most significant aspects to it as referenced in the President’s announcement is the overt restrictions put on China and Russia in particular, according to Fox News:
President Donald Trump struck a sweeping agreement with Denmark and Greenland this week granting the United States permanent military rights on the strategically placed Arctic island.
The U.S. will now have permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland, and the ability to establish additional military installations as needed, according to a senior U.S. official who outlined the deal exclusively to Fox News Digital.
The deal bars China, Russia and other non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or maintaining troops in Greenland. It also restricts adversaries from investing in sensitive sectors that could pose a threat to U.S. national security.
“This historic deal is a huge win for the United States and the American people,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News Digital. “Thanks to President Trump’s vision and leadership, this historic agreement permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer.”
“Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and the surrounding area,” Rubio said. “This deal permanently and completely addresses our national security concerns in Greenland.
The deal is designed to remain in effect even if Greenland eventually becomes an independent country, they added.
Trump had repeatedly argued that control of Greenland was necessary for U.S. national security, pointing to the island’s strategic location in the Arctic as Russia and China expand their presence and capabilities in the region.
The deal significantly expands on the longstanding U.S. defense relationship with Greenland. The U.S. already operates Pituffik Space Base and has maintained military access to the island under a defense agreement dating back to 1951.
ADVERTISEMENTUnder the new agreement, however, Denmark and Greenland would not have approval authority over additional U.S. military installations. The U.S. would consult with them but would have the right to build new installations when it determines they are necessary without needing their buy-in, the official said. (Emphasis added.)
Did you catch the part I highlighted in bold about the process the US would need to go through to build military bases in Greenland?
Let me sum it up as succinctly as possible, so you don’t have to scroll back up.
There is no process.
If the US identifies a security need, it can fill that need.
Neither Greenland nor Denmark even have the authority to question the US military use of the territory.
Again, considering the sweeping nature of this agreement as indicated by President Trump’s announcement, I have to wonder — did he make them a deal they couldn’t refuse? (Shout out to the God Father movies, if you didn’t catch that.)
And to add even more icing to the top of that cake, none of this is going to cost the American taxpayer a dime?
I can only assume that Denmark and/or Greenland itself is incurring those costs. But we’ll have to wait for more details to find out the minutia.
Before President Trump won in November 2024, he had been discussing the need to have US military control over Greenland.
Within two months of taking office in 2025, he was pointing out the Chinese and Russian warships traversing the territory, indicating the “need” for American to control that region:

By the end of 2025, President Trump was drilling down on the issue.
Cue the meme generators — Marco Rubio was named point man on the issue in this Oval Office event from December of last year:

At the time, as usual… so many people dismissed that as mere crazy talk, wishful thinking, or just empty Trump rhetoric.
I’m not sure what historical context the ’empty Trump rhetoric’ idea relied on.
But as with most things, he said it needed to happen and he has apparently pulled it off.
This is breaking news, and I’m sure there will be lots of details coming out as the agreement is fully revealed.
As of now, that’s the full story. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
But I just have to wonder at what point the Trump-haters will realize that betting against President Trump is statistically a losing wager?
What are your thoughts?
