Putin previously threatened ‘consequences greater than any of you have ever seen’ if outside countries attempt to interfere in his invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian President has already taken retaliatory measures against western countries, from personally sanctioning members of Biden’s administration to demanding that ‘unfriendly countries’ pay for Russian oil in rubles today.

Now, Russia has escalated its threats to a new level by saying that if Russia is subjected to an ‘existential threat’, using nuclear weapons isn’t off the table.

Putin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov joined CNN’s Christiane Amanour on Tuesday. During their discussion, Peskov said Russia will use its nuclear weapons if faced with an “existential threat.”

Christiane Amanpour: Is President Putin, because again the Finnish President said to me that when he asked Putin directly directly about this, President Putin laid that card on the table, President Putin said if anyone tried to stop him “very bad things will happen.” And I want to know whether you are convinced or confident that your boss will not use that option?

Dmitry Peskov: Well, we have a concept of domestic security. And, well it’s public. You can read all the reasons for nuclear arms to be used. So if it is an existential threat for our country then it can be used in accordance with our const…(unintelligible) There are no other reasons that were mentioned in that text.

Christiane Amanpour: So you’re basically saying only an existential threat to your country. I still don’t know if I got a full answer from you.

 

Russia and China have developed a hypersonic missile capability that the United States does not yet have.  Russia’s hypersonic missiles can travel at 7,000 miles per hour and can reach London in five minutes.
