Chief Justice John Roberts released a statement earlier this week condemning the person who leaked the Roe v. Wade draft opinion.  He called the leaker ‘foolish’ and commissioned an investigation to find the person responsible.

No one has come out against the leaker as strong as Justice Clarence Thomas.  Thomas released a statement to the Washington Post earlier this week saying that the leaks and the reaction to them ‘bode ill for a free society.’

He also criticized people who don’t respect US institutions and said that certain political factions are becoming ‘addicted to wanting certain outcomes’ rather than ‘living with outcomes they don’t like.’

Thomas is one of, if not the most conservative justices on the bench.  He used to take a more passive role on the court until the passing of Justice Scalia.  He seems ready to take a leadership role among Conservative justices and be more assertive to fill Scalia’s shoes with his statements this week.

“Thomas decried what he described as an erosion of respect for the high court and made an apparent reference to protests that erupted after the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion suggesting the court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, with major implications for access to abortion.

He said that as a society, “we are becoming addicted to wanting particular outcomes, not living with the outcomes we don’t like,” according to Reuters.

“We can’t be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that,” he added.”

Thomas expressed concern about younger generations who don’t respect our institutions and only seem focused on political outcomes.

“It bodes ill for a free society,” he said, according to The Washington Post. It can’t be that institutions “give you only the outcome you want, or can be bullied” into submission.

Thomas also expressed concern about a “different attitude of the young” towards respect for institutions and the law, suggesting this is on the decline relative to past generations, as cited by the outlet.”
