Despite a wave of leftist opposition from both sides of the border, one prominent Democrat proved his willingness to endorse President Donald Trump’s tough trade talk with Canada.

Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) offered his remarks on the topic in an interview this week.

As The Hill reported:

“If Canada thinks they’re better off without our goods, I wish them good luck,” Golden told the Portland Press Herald on Tuesday. “I suspect in the long run, it won’t go well for them.”

The Trump administration introduced a 50 percent tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports over the weekend after failed trade negotiations between the two nations. Trump also threatened 50 percent tariffs on vehicles and auto parts effective Jan. 1.

“America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer!” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social. “Someone should get these clowns to ‘fall in line’ or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!”

Canada’s reaction to Trump’s position has fueled even more social media backlash:

Here’s the full text from the post above:

Canada just declared economic war on America.

They slammed tariffs on HALF of our goods.

Steel and aluminum? DOUBLED to 50%.

700 more American products? TARGETED.

They call it “hitting back.”

Trump calls it what it really is:

For years Canada has been bleeding America dry — $60 BILLION a year in losses.

Our dairy farmers? CRUSHED.

Hockey sticks and whiskey games? OVER.

And then Trump dropped the nuclear option:

“The United States is giving serious consideration to renaming Lake Ontario… to Lake America.”

Ontario’s Premier is losing his mind.

Prime Minister Carney is screaming about “war.”

GOOD.

America First means we stop getting played by our so-called “friends.”

Pay your fair share…

Or lose the business.

**This is only the beginning.**

Fox News provided these details:

The U.S. imposed new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods such as wine, furniture and dairy products, while Carney said U.S. trade demands proved Washington wanted to “destroy our major industries,” including autos, steel and aluminum, FOX Business previously reported.

“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade,” Trump said Thursday. “Very sadly, even the military, you know, we defend Canada for nothing. We don’t get anything. They don’t pay us to defend Canada.”
