A North Carolina state lawmaker was arrested on Wednesday and faces multiple sex charges.

Cecil Brockman, a Democrat representing Guilford County in the North Carolina House of Representatives, was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of someone between the ages of 13 and 15.

NC Newsline has more:

He is being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

A magistrate’s order denying bond to Brockman cites his role as a state representative with “abundant resources to aid in his flight from prosecution.”

Brockman has made efforts to contact the victim, including using his status and “has gone as far as attempting to locate the juvenile in the hospital,” according to the order.

The lawmaker’s legislative assistant declined to comment.

Democratic Gov. Josh Stein described the charges as “extremely serious and deeply troubling.”

“While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately,” Stein said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Robert Reives said the allegations against Brockman are serious and “if true, would disqualify him from public office,” WRAL noted.

“This is a developing situation and it is important to let the legal process unfold,” Reives added.

WRAL shared further info:

In an updated statement, Reives added, “As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Rep. Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Rep. Brockman must resign immediately.”

Before Reives’ additional comments, the North Carolina Democratic Party first called on Brockman to resign immediately.

“The profound seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community,” the party said in a statement.

House Speaker Destin Hall, R-Caldwell, also called on Brockman to resign, calling the charges “shocking and extremely serious.”
