More from the New York Post:

Law enforcement, which is on scene at the base, identified a suspect, but has not released a name, WTOC reports.

Fort Stewart is the largest US Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering some 280,000 acres (437 square miles, about 93% the size of New York City) in southeast Georgia, and serving as home to the 3rd Infantry Division as well as a training area for a number of other military units.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said.

The Hill noted:

An active shooter has been confirmed at Fort Stewart, and an unknown number of victims are being taken to a local hospital, according to Maj. Charles Egan.

Egan said casualties had been confirmed, but it was unclear if that included injuries, death, or both. It was also unclear whether the victims are servicemembers.

Lt. Col Angel Tomko, Division PIO, said the incident occurred in the 2nd Brigade area located off of Highway 144, about 43 miles southwest of Savannah.

The brigade, which is not located in the main Fort Stewart area, was placed on lockdown shortly after 11 a.m. ET, as was the Wright Army Airfield, roughly five miles away, per the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) Commander.

The lockdown was lifted before 12:30 p.m. ET, and dozens of cars could be seen filing in through the gates.
