There are reports coming from journalists, and breaking on social media, about a possible explosive device discovered near the White House this afternoon.

Secret Service as well as Capitol Police and Bomb Squad units have reportedly responded.

There is very little news coverage at the moment, as the information is just breaking.

The U.S. Secret Service along with area law enforcement were investigating reports of ‘explosive ordnance’ found in the area of the White House.

Evacuations were ordered that included parts of the Treasury Building and Hotel Washington, according to local ABC News affiliate in DC:

The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) were investigating a report of an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) suspicious device in Northwest D.C., officials confirmed Thursday.

MPD officials said they responded to 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW for the report of an EOD. Evacuations were ordered as a precaution for parts of the Treasury Building and the Hotel Washington, according to the USSS.

According to the RawsAlerts post that first caught my attention, the White House and Ellipse areas are closed.

Roads are being blocked as the heightened security is put in place while authorities investigate:

She reported that police had cordoned off the White House, with investigations ongoing into the suspicious package.
