Some of our more seasoned readers might remember a time when the ACLU had integrity. That time has long passed.  The American Civil Liberties Union used to defend people’s rights regardless of where they stood on the political spectrum or if it was the popular thing to do.

After President Trump’s election, the ACLU was flush with cash from angry liberals and leftists.  After that, they started to follow the money and focus exclusively on progressive and left-wing causes.

“I got the sense it was more important for A.C.L.U. staff to identify with clients and progressive causes than to stand on principle,” Said David Goldberger, the acclaimed ACLU lawyer who defended the Nazi’s right to free speech in Skokie, Washington.

It’s clear that the ACLU has sold out and is just following the money.  This week, the final nail in the coffin for their credibility came as the ACLU was forced to admit that they took sides in Amber Heard’s and Johnny Depp’s high-profile divorce.

The ACLU  helped Heard draft a statement to the Washington Post accusing Depp of domestic abuse and made her an ambassador for domestic abuse in the organization.  In return, she only had to pledge $3.5 million to the organization.  What a bargain.

The Guardian Reported

“The ACLU helped Amber Heard draft the Washington Post article accusing Johnny Depp of abuse after the organization was promised a $3.5m donation from her divorce – though at least $500,000 of it eventually came from a fund connected to Tesla founder Elon Musk, jurors in the Depp-Heard defamation trial heard on Thursday.

The American Civil Liberties Union’s general counsel, Terence Dougherty, testified that the organization decided to propose Heard as an ambassador for the group after Heard pledged the sizeable donation over 10 years.

“Ms Heard spoke with such clarity and expertise on issues of gender-based violence that [ACLU representatives] decided she would be an appropriate person to ask to become an ACLU ambassador,” Dougherty testified.

But of the $1.3m slice of the donation that was meant to come from Heard, $100,000 came directly from her ex-husband Depp, and, based on an email from Elon Musk, the court was told, $500,000 came from a donor-advised fund connected to Musk yet registered as a donation from Heard.”
