A large fire started at one of Australia’s two operational oil refineries.

The inferno erupted at Viva Energy’s Corio refinery in Geelong, Victoria.

Some residents in the area were told to stay indoors due to smoke.

“It supplies 50 percent of Victoria’s fuel and 10 percent of Australia’s, putting out 120,000 barrels of oil a day,” Daily Mail stated.

The Country Fire Authority issued a watch and act for a large swathe of Geelong, with the warning urging “anyone located in to the south of Refinery Road Corio” to take shelter indoors immediately.

“There is a factory fire in Refinery Road, Corio,” the advice said.

“A wind change has caused the smoke to be blown towards the Northern Geelong area.”

Residents were also being urged to keep off the roads to allow emergency services to respond.

The Victoria Emergency website shows a large blaze reported on Refinery Rd, Corio, which is not yet under control.

The incident map said 10 vehicles were responding to the blaze.
