The FBI on Sunday arrested D.C. Council member Trayon White, officials confirmed.

The circumstances surrounding White’s arrest are not yet known.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said he does not know the reason for the investigation or why federal authorities took White into custody.

NBC Washington reports:

News4 video shows agents outside his apartment in Southeast D.C. Agents appeared to try to access White’s car, a silver Tesla with D.C. Council license plates.

“To be honest, this is actually not the first time the FBI has been to our building,” said Seun Sanusi, who lives in the apartment complex. “So the FBI being here is not surprising.”

White is expected in Federal Court for his first appearance on the charges.

“I’m assuming it’s a big deal,” Sanusi said. “So hopefully whatever happened, it isn’t too bad.”

White remained in custody as of Sunday evening.

He was first elected to represent Ward 8 in 2016. In June, he won the Democratic primary for what would be his third term.

Per Fox News:

City Council President Phil Mendelson confirmed that fellow council member Trayon White Sr. was arrested on Sunday afternoon.

“I’ve talked to several people. I can confirm he was arrested around 2 o’clock by the FBI,” Mendelson told a WTTG reporter. “I’m anxious to get more details to understand what is the situation. … You all know as much as I know.”

Fox News has reached out to the FBI Washington field office, which declined to comment at this time.

White made national headlines in March 2018 when he suggested that Jewish financiers control the weather. The claim came as he filmed himself driving through downtown Washington in the snow and ranted about “climate manipulation.”

“And D.C. keep talking about, ‘We’re a resilient city.’ And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man,” he said in the now-deleted video. “Be careful.”
