On Wednesday the federal government announced it would be filing charges against an immigration attorney for making more than 180 bogus asylum claims in which she lied to cover up her clients’ criminal pasts and fabricated other important details to help them achieve legal status.

This is sort of stuff is why we desperately need to fix our immigration system and enforce the law as it exists right now.

The Washington Times is reporting:

Andreea Dumitru faces counts of asylum fraud and making false statements on applications dating back to 2012.

The indictment, unveiled in court documents Wednesday, says Ms. Dumitru lied to shield applicants’ criminal pasts and to make up details of their supposed persecution back home — a key element for those seeking asylum.

She also forged some of her clients’ signatures on the documents, the government says.

“There are people who enter this country with valid asylum claims, waiting in line among all the frauds,” said Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent-in-Charge Angel M. Melendez.

Asylum is a protection granted to people who’ve already made it into the U.S. It’s similar to protections for refugees, who are those applying from outside the country.

Illegal immigrants have abused the asylum system for many years now, transforming it into a backdoor channel through which they can legally gain access to America.

The reason we have immigration law to begin with is to prevent criminals and other shady types from getting into the country and placing citizens in harm’s way. Efforts by the left to basically just allow people into the country willy nilly have constantly ended in disaster.

If we want the best citizens the world has to offer, we have to reward people for coming to America the right way, while discouraging those who want to sneak in by upholding the law and punishing wrongdoers.

If we fail to do this, we place our very own people in unnecessary danger.
