The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Saturday that an “unknown male” fired shots at U.S. Border Patrol agents conducting immigration enforcement operations in Chicago.

“Today, U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, when an unknown male driving a black Jeep fired shots at agents and fled the scene. An unknown number of agitators also threw a paint can and bricks at Border Patrol’s vehicles. Chicago Police Department was called for assistance and cleared the scene. The shooter and vehicle remain at large, and this is a dynamic situation,” DHS stated on X.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of violence and obstruction. Over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in assaults and obstruction targeting federal law enforcement during operations. These confrontations highlight the dangers our agents face daily and the escalating aggression toward law enforcement. The violence must end,” the statement continued.

CBS News shared more:

Saturday marked two months since the start of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement effort dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz” began in the Chicago area.

Little Village and Pilsen have been among the hardest Chicago neighborhoods hit by the immigration enforcement operation. In October, there were chaotic scenes as people in the community faced off against federal agents and, in one incident, agents fired tear gas at crowds.

Last week, Little Village leaders called on Mayor Brandon Johnson to do more to enforce his executive order barring federal agents from using city-owned property for immigration enforcement operations, after a video surfaced allegedly showing vehicles with agents inside a parking lot of a Chicago public school.

In response, hundreds of students from Little Village Lawndale High School staged a walkout and protest march opposing the increased immigration enforcement.

DHS said there have been more than 3,000 arrests since the start of Operation Midway Blitz in September. Officials would not say when the operation is expected to end.

Fox News shared a breaking news alert:

“FOX 32 Chicago reported a flash bang was deployed as crowds surrounded federal agents for multiple blocks,” Fox News stated.

Authorities detained at least one individual.

Fox News noted:

Chief Border Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino fired back at an X user who said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “illegally fired tear gas into the street,” saying there is “more to come.”

“Funny, you keep leaving out key facts including several shots fired at agents by a suspect, violent mobs throwing bricks and assaultive subjects,” Bovino wrote in a post. “We still managed to apprehend illegal aliens today in Little Village. More to come.
