Bonnie Pierce made it out of her burning home. Then she realized her young daughter was still inside.
She went back for her.
Firefighters later found the Minnesota mother shielding the little girl with her own body. Her daughter survived, but Bonnie died from her injuries.
Bonnie’s final act of protection left her daughter alive and a family mourning:

It is hard to read that without stopping for a moment. A mother lost her life trying to bring her child home.
FOX 9 reported that St. Paul fire officials described the rescue at a Saturday news conference, a week after the August 22 fire at a duplex on the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue:
Crews entered the home and encountered heavy flames and thick black smoke as they searched for anyone trapped inside. A firefighter found Bonnie Lynn Pierce in a bedroom and discovered her daughter underneath her when he lifted her.
First responders brought both of them out and took them to the hospital. Bonnie died August 24, authorities said, while her daughter remained hospitalized in critical condition at the time of the Saturday briefing.
Officials had not announced the cause of the fire. At the news conference, the family remembered Bonnie as funny and full of life, and honored the mother who went back for her child.

The Pierce family shared more about the escape and Bonnie’s injuries, along with an encouraging update on Grace’s recovery and an appeal to help the children left without their mother:
Bonnie, 38, was home with daughters Aurora and Grace when the fire began. Aurora escaped by kicking an air-conditioning unit out of a window and climbing through the opening; Bonnie also got outside before returning for Grace.
The fundraiser says Bonnie was unresponsive when she was found, and rescuers performed CPR. She suffered burns over 48 percent of her body and died despite efforts to save her, while Grace remains hospitalized and is expected to recover fully.
Bonnie leaves four daughters, Alaynah, Aurora, Jemma and Grace, and a grandson, Atlas. The family says donations will help cover Grace’s care, living expenses and other costs following the fire.
