On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke at the University of Southern Florida. As he approached the podium, a line of high school students wearing masks stood behind the spot where he would speak. After telling them they could remove their masks, some of them did… prompting one mother to absolutely lose her mind.

“You do not have to wear those masks,” DeSantis had told the college students. “I mean, please take them off. Honestly—it’s not doing anything, and we’ve gotta stop with this COVID theater! So if you want to wear it, fine—but this is ridiculous.”

Some of the students could be seen removing the masks as they nervously smiled.

Following this event, the mother of one of the students was interviewed about how she felt about DeSantis telling her son he could take his mask off. She expressed her anger that the governor would dare suggest a different opinion than her own to her son.

“It’s just shocking that the governor told these kids ‘Take off your masks’. He pretty much said ‘Take off your masks, stupid” — ‘Take off your masks, your parents don’t matter’, even though I’m telling you parents matter,” said the kid’s mom.

When asked if he felt pressured by DeSantis to take his mask off, the student paused for a while to think, then replied, “Umm… A little,” not seeming nearly as distraught as his mother seemed about the ordeal.
