Two-year-old Barrett “Bear” Walsh should be alive.
Instead, prosecutors say the little boy was found hanging from a basement rafter inside his family’s Illinois home while a neighbor fought to save him.
His mother, Corie Walsh, now faces three counts of first-degree murder.

The allegations are almost impossible to process.
ABC7 Chicago reported that Frankfort police were called to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday for an unresponsive child.
A neighbor was performing CPR on Barrett when officers arrived. The 2-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the same neighbor found Walsh in an upstairs bathtub with self-inflicted injuries. An infant in the home was unharmed, and two other school-age children returned around the time Barrett and Walsh were discovered.
Walsh’s husband was out of state when it happened, prosecutors said. He flew home that evening while investigators worked inside the residence and the family’s three surviving children remained physically unharmed.
Following an investigation by Frankfort police and the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force, Walsh was charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
An autopsy’s preliminary finding was that Barrett died from asphyxia caused by ligature compression of the neck, according to local reporting on the court filing. The final coroner’s findings remained subject to toxicology and the continuing investigation.
Walsh was hospitalized after officers found her with injuries authorities believe were self-inflicted. Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, said the defense position is that Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode and that the family is mourning Barrett.
That claim will be tested against the evidence. For now, police have made an arrest, prosecutors have filed murder charges, and a 2-year-old child is dead.
Police said the family had no prior contact with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services before Tuesday. The agency became involved after Barrett’s death.

The detention petition laid out another deeply disturbing allegation.
Frankfort Patch reported that Walsh allegedly told officers she had killed Barrett because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.”
Witnesses also told investigators that Walsh had recently become highly invested in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother who admitted killing her three children but argued that postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible.
According to the detention filing, Walsh was discussing the Clancy case with friends in a group text only hours before Barrett’s death on Tuesday.
That timing ignited an immediate wave of anger online. It is a documented connection in the investigation, but it does not by itself establish that the Clancy trial caused what happened in Frankfort.
The petition says prosecutors consider Walsh a specific, real, and present threat to her husband and three surviving children. It also says she had made statements about harming members of her family.
Walsh remained in custody while receiving medical treatment and was expected to be transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility. Her detention hearing was scheduled for September 8 before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.
The charges carry a potential prison term of 60 to 100 years if Walsh is convicted, according to the detention filing.
The separate Clancy proceeding ended Friday without a verdict. The Associated Press reported that the judge declared a mistrial after jurors said they could not reach a unanimous decision on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her children.
Clancy admitted killing her three young children in 2023. Her defense argued that postpartum psychosis left her unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions, while prosecutors argued that she acted deliberately and took steps to create a window in which she could carry out the killings.
After seven days of deliberations, the jury remained deadlocked. The mistrial returned the case to a pretrial posture, leaving prosecutors to decide whether to pursue another trial, negotiate a plea agreement, or take another course.
The outcome did not decide the competing claims about Clancy’s mental state. It also did not establish any legal or clinical conclusion about Walsh.
The two cases remain separate, even though investigators say Walsh was closely following the Clancy trial before Barrett’s death.
Last Tuesday, after obsessing over the Clancy trial, she hung her two-year-old from the rafters.

The defense statement does not change the center of this story.
Barrett Walsh was two years old. He was defenseless, and his life was taken inside the place where he should have been safest.
The charges are allegations, and Walsh has not been convicted. Her next court appearance was scheduled for September 8.
For Barrett, there is no next hearing and no second chance.
A community has been left mourning a little boy whose life had barely begun.
