Multiple outlets report that Iran shot down a U.S. fighter jet over the country.

According to The New York Times, U.S. officials and Iranian state-affiliated media said the jet had been shot down.

“The fate of the plane’s crew was unclear, as American officials scrambled to mount a search and rescue operation before Iran could get to any survivors, officials said,” the outlet wrote.

Axios shared further:

It’s the first time since the beginning of the war that a U.S. jet was downed by enemy fire.

The U.S. military and the White House didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Friday, Iranian state media published pictures and videos that allegedly show parts of the downed plane and one of the ejection seats.

The photos and videos suggest it is an F-15 fighter jet.

Journalist Ben Swann called it a “wild story” and “hard to determine what is correct.”

“Iranian state media Tasnim is reporting Iranian forces have captured the American pilots of an F-15E that was reportedly downed over Iran,” Swann said.

“If confirmed, the US just lost an F-15E and its crew inside Iran, the first American POWs of this war. Meanwhile, US helicopters have been recorded throughout the day today searching for the pilots,” he continued.

Some reports claimed the pilots had already been “extracted safely by a US-Israeli rescue team.”

However, those reports remain unconfirmed.

More from Stars and Stripes:

Iranian state media was urging residents to hand over any “enemy pilot” to police and promised a reward for anyone who did, The Associated Press reported.

Since the war began, Iran has made at least six false claims about shooting down U.S. aircraft, all of which American officials have denied.

U.S. Central Command did not respond to a request for comment from Stars and Stripes.

This would be the first time Iran has successfully downed a U.S. aircraft since Operation Epic Fury began more than a month ago. The reported crash comes as President Donald Trump suggests the U.S. will wrap up its mission in two to three weeks.

Trump on Friday celebrated a U.S. strike on a major bridge west of Tehran, threatening more strikes against Iran’s infrastructure if a deal is not made quickly.
