Democrat presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy has gathered quite a bit support from both sides of the aisle.

For a democrat, he’s said many things that have resonated with conservatives.

However, Kennedy now finds himself between a rock and a hard place in regards to his stance on one of the hottest topics in the country: abortion.

Kennedy initially claimed that he’d support a ban on abortions after three months.

A statement released by his campaign cut against that claim entirely.

They say that he misunderstood the question:

“Today, Mr. Kennedy misunderstood a question posed to him by a NBC reporter in a crowded, noisy exhibit hall at the Iowa State Fair,” claimed his campaign in a statement.

“Mr. Kennedy’s position on abortion is that it is always the woman’s right to choose. He does not support legislation banning abortion.”

For a guy that has been fairly clear about most everything else, it seems that Kennedy has now gotten himself into some hot water with both sides of the aisle.

Rolling Stone reports on Kennedy’s flip flop on abortion:

ROBERT F. KENNEDY Jr. is claiming he misunderstood a question on Sunday when he announced his support for a ban on abortion after three months. In an interview, he had said he would sign a federal ban on abortions after three months of pregnancy if elected president, a stance that puts the nominally Democratic candidate once again at odds with his party.

“I believe a decision to abort a child should be up to the women during the first three months of life,” Kennedy told NBC News in an interview at the Iowa State Fair. When he was asked if that meant signing a federal ban at 15 or 21 weeks, he said yes.

“Once a child is viable, outside the womb, I think then the state has an interest in protecting the child,” he said. He added: “I’m for medical freedom. Individuals are able to make their own choices.”

A statement from his campaign clarified his position on Sunday. “Today, Mr. Kennedy misunderstood a question posed to him by a NBC reporter in a crowded, noisy exhibit hall at the Iowa State Fair,” the statement read. “Mr. Kennedy’s position on abortion is that it is always the woman’s right to choose. He does not support legislation banning abortion.”

Here were his initial comments on the issue:

Kennedy sure seemed to understand the original question here…

What gives?

Fox News covered Kennedy’s original stance on the issue:

Robert F. Kennedy, who spent the weekend campaigning in Iowa, said in an interview he would support a ban on abortions on pregnancies three months or later if elected, according to reports, though his team later clarified the candidate’s statement.

NBC reported that Kennedy made the statement during an interview at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday.

“I believe a decision to abort a child should be up to the women during the first three months of life,” the Democratic presidential candidate said.

When asked if it meant he would sign a ban at 15 or 21 weeks, he said yes.

“Once a child is viable outside the womb, I think then the state has an interest in protecting the child,” Kennedy added. “I’m for medical freedom. Individuals are able to make their own choices.”
