John Bolton says President Trump did not plan a coup d’ etat on January 6 or try to overthrow the constitution. He said Trump simply wanted to buy more time so the election integrity questions could be sent back to the states for consideration. Bolton did not hesitate to swipe at Trump, implying that he lacked intelligence.

The troubling part of Bolton’s interview with CNN Jake Tapper is where he admits that he participated in planning coup d’etats in other countries.

“one doesn’t have to be brilliant to attempt a coup,” Tapper said.

“I disagree with that,” Bolton responded. “As somebody who has helped plan coup d’état—not here, but other places—it takes a lot of work. And that’s not what he did. It was just stumbling around from one idea to another.”

When asked for details Bolton laughed and said, “I’m not going to get into the specifics, but…”

“Not that we had all that much to do with it, but I saw what it took for an opposition to try to overturn an illegally elected president. And they failed. The notion that Donald Trump was half as competent as the Venezuelan opposition is laughable,” Bolton said.

“I feel like there’s other stuff you’re not telling me,” Tapper said.

“I’m sure there is,” Bolton laughed as he steered the conversation toward the J6 hearings.

John Bolton’s arrogantly casual comment that he had helped overthrow other governments sparked disbelief and anger.
