CNN’s live broadcast fell apart Monday afternoon, leaving viewers with scrambled images, broken audio and a dead signal for the better part of an hour.
The meltdown struck in the middle of the network’s daytime political coverage.
One moment, a panel was discussing President Trump’s trade fight with Canada. Seconds later, the picture froze and dissolved into a wall of pixelated fragments.
Then CNN vanished.

CNN identified the cause as a technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery, the corporate parent whose television portfolio stretches from 24-hour news and premium cable to major entertainment networks.
The disruption began shortly after noon Eastern and knocked CNN’s live signal out during the noon hour, interrupting a political panel without warning and leaving the network unable to continue its scheduled programming.
The breakdown reached far beyond one camera, one studio or one control room, because company channels across multiple distribution systems encountered problems at roughly the same time.
WBD also operates HBO, TNT, TBS and other channels, and CNN said the same companywide technical failure disrupted multiple properties while engineers worked to bring the feeds back.
Exactly what viewers saw depended on how they received the channel. Some feeds froze on a panel from Inside Politics, while others flashed garbled colors, fragmented images or a blank screen.
The network offered no more specific explanation for the failure. Its own account described a companywide technical problem, with no indication that the outage came from a cyberattack or any outside interference.
That left viewers staring at a spectacularly awkward sight: a 24-hour news network unable to keep its own news signal on the air.

Insider Paper documented trouble on both CNN and CNN International while the outage was unfolding. The failures included broken audio, distorted video and a signal that disappeared entirely for some television customers across several forms of distribution.
The problem also varied from one provider to another, which explains why some people could still see CNN while others received a digital mess. Reports from cable and streaming customers showed the same basic pattern: other channels continued working while CNN’s feed failed.
Early speculation online included the possibility of a hack, largely because the on-screen corruption looked so bizarre.
CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery gave that theory no support, and the company continued to characterize the event as a technical issue.
The scale of the outage remained unclear once service returned. CNN confirmed the signal loss, yet the company had not disclosed the specific equipment, software or distribution failure that caused it.
The network finally came back at approximately 12:51 p.m. Eastern.
Dana Bash returned to the screen, acknowledged that Warner Bros. Discovery channels had suffered a technical problem and apologized to viewers for the interruption.

By then, CNN had been fighting the outage for nearly an hour.
The signal is back. The explanation remains only two words deep: technical issue.
