The Facebook and Instagram pages of former President Donald Trump have finally been reactivated by Meta, the parent company of both social media platforms. His accounts had been indefinitely suspended after the Jan. 6 Capitol protests.
Last month, Meta announced that Trump’s social media accounts would be reinstated since he is no longer considered a “serious risk to public safety.” However, Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta, said there would be “new guardrails” in place so they can maintain some control over Trump’s posts.
Elaborating on the “guardrails” that will be placed on Trump’s account, Clegg said, “Mr. Trump is subject to our Community Standards… he now also faces heightened penalties for repeat offenses – penalties which will apply to other public figures whose account are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol.”
In a statement, Clegg said, “Social media is rooted in the belief that open debate and the free flow of ideas are important values, especially at a time when they are under threat in many places around the world. As a general rule, we don’t want to get in the way of open, public, and democratic debate on Meta’s platforms- especially in the context of elections in democratic societies like the United States.”
An interesting statement considering the massive censorship initiative that silences all voices that don’t agree with the left-wing narratives.
However, Clegg insisted that Meta wants the public to be able to “hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad, and the ugly – so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box.”
After Meta first announced their plans to reinstate Trump’s accounts, he posted on Truth Social saying,
“FACEBOOK, which has lost Billions of Dollars in value since “deplatforming” your favorite President, me, has just announced that they are reinstating my account. Such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President, or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution! THANK YOU TO TRUTH SOCIAL FOR DOING SUCH AN INCREDIBLE JOB. YOUR GROWTH IS OUTSTANDING, AND FUTURE UNLIMITED!!!”
After his accounts were officially brought back, Trump reposted an article on Truth Social from Washington Times and said, “Their Stock took a BIG PLUNGE without US!”
