After a controversy that lasted multiple days as people criticized the Biden administration for inaction, a Chinese spy balloon that has been hovering over the northern United States was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean near the Carolinas on Saturday afternoon.
The issue may be ongoing as there have been reports of other Chinese balloons in United States airspace.
The Biden administration reportedly waited to shoot down the balloon due to fears of US casualties if debris from the balloon touched down near US population centers.
The Canadian government played a role in the balloon being shot down as it was revealed that they were tracking it through NORAD.
“We thank Canada for its contribution to tracking and analysis of the balloon through NORAD as it transited North America.” Said Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has repeatedly denied claims that the balloon was being used to spy on the United States or US citizens and has said it was used for ‘meteorological’ purposes.
There has already been diplomatic fallout from the issue as well as Secretary of State Anthony Blinken canceled a trip to China as the scandal unfolded.
Earlier today, Biden faced criticism after it was revealed that the Biden administration was aware of the presence of Chinese balloons conducting surveillance on foreign countries such as Japan and India and in Hawaii.
