The Mississippi Legislature passed a bill to eliminate the state income tax.

“The bill would first reduce, then gradually eliminate the state income tax,” WDAM reports.

“Congratulations to the Mississippi legislature on passing historic tax reform and ELIMINATING THE INCOME TAX! What a great day for Mississippi taxpayers,” Gov. Tate Reeves said.

“Speaker @JasonWhiteMS, @tlamar44, and the Mississippi House just tabled the Motion to Reconsider on HB1!” Reeves added.

“What does this mean? The bill is headed to my desk. NOW I have 2 options: Option 1: Sign HB1 and end the tax on work! Option 2: Veto the bill! (HINT: Option 2 AIN’T happening!!) It’s a great day for Mississippi!” he continued.

WDAM reports:

Under the bill, the tax on gasoline would rise, while taxes on groceries fall.

“What a great day for Mississippi taxpayers,” Reeves messaged.

Reeves said he was “looking forward to receiving this bill” Friday.

Once signed, the law would go into effect on the first day of the states new fiscal year, July 1.

From The Clarion-Ledger:

A plan to eliminate the state income tax passed the House on Thursday but was held up by a motion to reconsider it before heading to Gov. Tate Reeves’s desk.

The motion is a tactic in the House by tax cut negotiators to continue talking about provisions of the tax cut plan.

In an unprecedented move, the House voted to concur with a Senate tax cut plan, which seeks to eliminate the income tax, cut the grocery tax to 5% from 7%, raise the gas tax by nine cents over three years and also establish a new set of hybrid public-private sector retirement benefits for public employees.

The measure passed, 92-27, in the chamber. It was then held by a motion by Rep. Karl Oliver, a Republican from Winona. Oliver is a member of House leadership.

Both Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Jason White’s offices declined to comment on the passage of the bill or the motion to reconsider, a change of pace for the chamber leaders who previously put out press releases and held interviews with media following previous movement on the tax cut issue this session.
