On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new gun control legislation that will freeze handgun ownership throughout the entire country. The government will also be placing tighter restrictions on who can own firearms, and increase penalties for gun smuggling and modification.

Trudeau announced these new measures at a press conference, where he reminded the public about his promise to enhance gun control measures nationwide and revealed the new laws that will be going into effect across the country:

“We’re introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership. What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in Canada.”

“As a further part of this new legislation, we’re also fighting gun smuggling and trafficking by increasing maximum criminal penalties and providing more tools for law enforcement to investigate firearm crimes. And we will require the permanent alteration of long gun magazines so they can never hold more than five rounds. These are actions that doctors, experts, chiefs of police have been calling for for years, and we’re acting on their advice.”

Trudeau also released a series of posts on Twitter explaining these new measures.

In his Twitter posts, Trudeau adds that the Canadian government will “make sure that people involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment have their firearms licenses taken away. And we’ll make sure that those who are considered a danger to themselves or others have to surrender their firearms to authorities.”

Joe Biden has also been discussing potential approaches to increased gun control following the Uvalde school shooting. Similar to the Canadian Prime Minister’s new legislation, Biden has acknowledged the possibility of expanding background checks for the purchase of firearms. He has also suggested the limited sales of certain weapons.

On Monday, after returning from his visit to the site of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Biden referred to 9mm handguns as “high-caliber weapons” and suggested they should be banned.

“They say a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out – may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” said Biden. “So, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is, uh, there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of… self-protection, hunting. And remember, the Constitution was never absolute.”

“Why should we allow people to have military-style weapons including pistols with 9mm bullets and can hold 10 or more rounds?” Biden asked.

These comments left many Americans concerned with how the Left has progressed so quickly from wanting to ban assault rifles to, apparently, wanting to ban handguns too.
