Legendary actor Sylvester Stallone just gave the world a peek inside his personal struggles.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Stallone revealed his previous obsession with using steroids while he filmed the hit movie, Rocky.
He also revealed that his obsession with staying fit also resulted in him being bulimic.
Mediaite reported more on Stallone’s struggles:
Sylvester Stallone revealed for the first time that he struggled with bulimia at the height of his ’80s action star fame, with the Rocky and Rambo star saying he was willing to torture himself to achieve the chiseled body he wanted to see on the silver screen.
ADVERTISEMENTThe Hollywood legend was also candid about his use of steroids.
“It became an obsession,” Stallone said during the Saturday episode of The Interview podcast. “Really bad, to the point where I became bulimic.”
He then noticed his admission surprised host Lulu Garcia-Navarro. “You didn’t know that? Oh, you heard it here first.”
Stallone said his fitness fixation got really bad in 1982 on the set of Rocky III, where marathon weightlifting, boxing, and swimming sessions — to go along with a very-low calorie diet — dropped his body fat percentage to 2.6%. He said it turned into an “obsessive body-worship kind of thing” where he did not want to lose the look he had worked so hard to obtain.
“I couldn’t hold anything down, or if I did, I didn’t want to keep it down, because I became so obsessed with staying at that point of fitness,” Stallone said.
He then told Garcia-Navarro he used performance-enhancing drugs to push his body even further.
“Nobody does it without additives and drugs, period. I don’t care who, that’s bullsh*t. They have to,” Stallone said. “But then again, it isn’t as though you are a junkie. But if you’re going to work and try to stay in shape for six months straight, and you’re eating yogurt and pudding — it’s not happening.”
“So you’re taking steroids, is what you’re saying?” Garcia-Navarro jumped in and asked.
“Oh my God, you have to!” Stallone said. “But you do it in a sensible way, 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off. People go, ‘Oh, you don’t get that way naturally.’ No, you don’t, unless you’re just a freak of nature.”
ADVERTISEMENTStallone has previously hinted at using PEDs to get in top shape.
He pleaded guilty to bringing human growth hormone into Australia back in 2007, with Stallone telling NBC afterward it helped him recover from injuries quicker.
It “takes off the wear and tear that your body takes,” Stallone said at the time. “The power to recuperate is very, very limited. So all it does is expedite.”
He told Garcia-Navarro he eventually “broke the cycle” when he starred in Copland in 1997, which required him to pack on 40 pounds. But the eating disorder had taken a “terrible toll” on his body by that point, he said.

Yahoo News revealed later in Stallone’s interview that he shared that when he was younger, his groin was almost ripped off while he was in a psych ward:
Sylvester Stallone claims that he was once sequestered in a psychiatric ward, where a fellow patient attempted to rip his groin off.
In his upcoming memoir, “The Steps,” out Sept. 29, Stallone recounted his traumatic childhood and teen years.
The “Rocky” star told the New York Times in a profile published Saturday that he attended a high school that would punish teenaged students who misbehaved by putting them in “a place called Park Lodge or the Snake Pit.”
“On the outside it looked like a big, old Tudor home from the ’20s, and then you walked inside and you entered the heart of insanity,” he recalled. “The smell, the filth, people running around naked, clawing, hands tied, drooling. This is what they thought would impress you never to break the rules again.”
ADVERTISEMENTStallone said he was left there for two weeks and was attacked by a “guy named Jay Bird.”
“He was big, had no hair, always naked, rotten teeth,” the actor explained. “They called him Jay Bird because he was always naked as a jaybird. And I go into the bathroom on the way to the food mess hall, and he comes in and comes around me and he’s like ripping on my throat and he is going into my pants and grabbing my groin.”
Stallone alleged that two guards ran in and began “beating the crap out of him [Bird] with razor straps.”
