A bipartisan group of senators have introduced a bill to end the Selective Service.

The bill, introduced by Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), would repeal the Military Selective Service Act.

“It has been over 50 yrs since the draft was last used. I’ve long stated that if a war is worth fighting Congress will vote to declare it and people will volunteer. This outdated gov program no longer serves a purpose and should be eliminated permanently,” Paul said.

From The Hill:

The legislation comes as Congress once again debates the expansion of the draft given the Defense Department opened all combat roles to women in 2015. Senate Democrats this year added language to the annual defense authorization bill to require women to register for the draft, prompting a backlash from Republicans and social conservatives.

A measure to compel women to register for potential service has continuously been stripped out of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) year after year, most recently in 2021 and 2022.

“First passed in 1917 to fill the ranks during World War I, the law requires all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 45 to register for possible military service, but it has not been used since the Vietnam War,” The Hill noted.

Per WEHT:

Sen. Wyden called the bill to repeal the Military Selective Service Act common sense bill that keeps money in American wallets and prevents the replication of “the same draft that sent two million unwilling young men to war 50 years ago.” The bill has been endorsed by several groups, including the Center on Conscience and War, World Beyond War, the International Peace Research Association and the Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft.
