Joe Biden lost to ‘uncommitted’ among Michigan Democrat primary voters in Dearborn.

Although Biden easily won Michigan, Dearborn residents chose ‘uncommitted’ in a protest vote over Biden’s response to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Dearborn has the highest percentage of Arab Americans of any city in the United States.

According to Newsweek, 56 percent of Dearborn residents voted for ‘uncommitted’ while 40 percent voted for Biden.

The difference was approximately 1,700 votes.

CNN reported the first numbers from Dearborn and said, “that’s a WOW!”

Detroit Free Press reports:

Four years ago, Joe Biden got 88% of the vote in the two precincts in the south end of Dearborn, a working-class area in the shadow of the Ford Rouge plant where more than 90% of the residents are Arab American and Muslim. Frustration with Donald Trump and his Muslim ban led to the president getting only 10.6% in the two precincts at Salina Intermediate School.

But on Tuesday, voters interviewed in Dearborn made it clear they were not supporting Biden this time, primarily because of his strong support for Israel as it launches attacks in Gaza and other parts of the Arab world. In the same two precincts in the south end of Dearborn where Biden got 88% in 2020, he got only 4% of the vote among Democrats while “uncommitted” got 91%, according to a Free Press analysis of precinct results.

Biden lost to “uncommitted” in Dearborn, Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights, the three cities in Michigan with the highest percentage of residents of Arab descent. In Dearborn, the “uncommitted” vote was 57% while Biden got 40%, according to results from Dearborn City Clerk George Darany. In Hamtramck, the margin was even greater, with the “uncommitted” vote among Democrats at 61%, according to results from City Clerk Rana Faraj. In Dearborn Heights, the “uncommitted” vote among Democrats edged out Biden 48% to 47%, according to city results. Biden had won Dearborn, Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights in November 2020.

A campaign called ‘Listen to Michigan’ began a few weeks ago to encourage voters to choose ‘uncommitted’ to pressure Biden to seek a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

“That’s over 100,000 loyal Michigan Democrats saying they’re uncommitted to Biden as he continues funding Israel’s horrific war in Gaza,” the campaign’s X profile page stated.

“Michigan voters are sending Biden a clear message in the February 27 Democratic primary that he can count us out. We are filling out the UNCOMMITTED bubble because we strongly reject Biden’s funding war and genocide in Gaza,” the campaign’s website read.

“Trump only won Michigan in 2016 by about 10,000 votes. Uncommitted Michigan Democrats opposed to Biden’s policy in Gaza can demonstrate that we hold his margin of victory for re-election. Biden must earn our vote through a dramatic change in policy,” it continued.

Per Newsweek:

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman in Congress, also supported the campaign. The Michigan Democrats said in a video posted on X that she was “proud” to pull a Democratic ballot and vote “uncommitted.”

Mitch Landrieu, a former Biden administration senior adviser and current national co-chair for Biden’s reelection campaign, acknowledged that “uncommitted” voters in Michigan had sent a message.

“Joe Biden had a really, really strong night tonight. You can’t cut it any other way than that,” Landrieu said on CNN. “That is not to say that the uncommitted vote wasn’t substantial.”

In a statement, Biden did not acknowledge the “uncommitted” effort, instead promoting what his administration has done for the people of Michigan.
