Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have canceled flights to Israel, citing fear of wider conflict in the region.

“Beginning with this evening’s flight from Newark Liberty to Tel Aviv, we are suspending for security reasons our daily Tel Aviv service as we evaluate our next steps,” a United spokesperson told USA TODAY.

“We continue to closely monitor the situation and will make decisions on resuming service with a focus on the safety of our customers and crews,” the statement added.

The outlet noted Delta will cancel flights between New York (JFK) and Tel Aviv through at least through August 2nd.

British Airways and German airline Lufthansa also canceled flights to Israel.

Per USA TODAY:

“Delta flights between New York-JFK and Tel Aviv will be paused through Friday, Aug. 2, due to ongoing conflict in the region. Sales of flights for DL234 on Jul. 31 and Aug. 1, and DL235 on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2. are suspended,” the airline said in a statement. “Customers impacted by the schedule change will receive notifications via the Fly Delta app and contact information listed in their reservation.”

The airline has also issued a waiver for flights to and from Israel through Aug. 14, which allows them to change their plans without paying a fare difference. Delta said it will continue monitoring the security situation and will keep customers updated about any further schedule changes.

“Israelis were left scrambling to find a way home after airlines suspended service to Tel Aviv fearing retribution for the elimination of two senior terrorists. Among those to cancel flights: Lufthansa, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Air India,” Israel National News wrote.

Per DPA:

The German airline Lufthansa is cancelling its flights to Beirut and Tel Aviv for the coming days due to the increasing tensions between Israel and Iran.

The suspension applies to all of the group’s airlines and to cargo and passenger aircraft alike, said a company spokesman on Thursday. The Lufthansa Group also includes Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.

Flights to Beirut have been cancelled up to and including Monday August 12. Flights to Tel Aviv will be suspended until Thursday, August 8.

Lufthansa cancelled the onward flight of an aircraft from Cyprus to Tel Aviv on Wednesday night for safety reasons. The A321 aircraft had previously landed at Larnaca Airport from Munich as planned in order to fly to Israel with a new crew, according to a company spokesman.

Lufthansa introduced stopovers in Cyprus to avoid overnight crew stays in an area of conflict and tension. The onward leg of the flight was cancelled because Iran had temporarily closed its airspace.
