Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) said Rep. Max Miller (R-OH), who was previously married to his daughter, should not serve in the House of Representatives and “needs serious psychological help.”

Miller has faced accusations of abusing Moreno’s daughter, Emily.

“As a father and husband, I can tell you the last two years have been pure h*** for my wife Bridget, our daughter Emily, me, and our entire family in the aftermath of Emily’s divorce. It has been horrific to watch this play out in full public view, all while knowing an innocent two-year-old girl is caught in the middle. Our priority has always been protecting our daughter and our granddaughter. Out of concern for the safety of my family, I hoped to keep this matter private but Max Miller’s increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior has made that impossible,” Moreno said.

“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help. He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter. If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives. I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does,” Moreno continued.

“I ran for office because I wanted to make a difference for the country that gave me every opportunity to succeed, and to leave this nation better for my children and grandchildren. That sacrifice has been especially hard on my wife Bridget, whose big heart and steady support have never wavered. I owe it to her, to Emily, and to my granddaughter to speak the truth now,” he added.

Miller has denied the accusations and said he would not step down ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Moreno’s denunciation of Miller came after the congressman did a livestream on Sunday denying the abuse accusations against him from Emily and alleging that she suffers from bipolar disorder, something she has disputed.

Just last week, Moreno had been asked by NOTUS whether Miller should vie for reelection and replied that he “doesn’t know.”

Miller represents Ohio’s 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of the Cleveland suburbs — a district President Trump won by 11 points in 2024. A Dem-sponsored poll in June showed Miller up just one point in the general election against Democrat Brian Poindexter.

Miller had previously been accused of abuse by former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham and was arrested for drunk driving when he was in college.

“If my daughter said the same thing to me, I personally wouldn’t wait two years before holding him accountable. You know this isn’t true and the only reason you are speaking out now is to hide from your own media circus. This is all political,” Miller responded.

Miller said in the livestream that he’d “been portrayed as an abusive husband, an abusive father and a violent man.”

“Those allegations have damaged my reputation, caused enormous pain to my family and most importantly, it’s affected our daughter,” he added.

Until now, Republicans across the board have chosen not to denounce Mr. Miller or call for his resignation, dismissing the charges against him as mere “allegations.” It was not clear on Sunday how Mr. Moreno’s weighing in would shift the response from other Republicans.

In a roughly 20-minute livestream, Mr. Miller categorically denied all the accusations that Ms. Moreno has leveled at him in court. He also claimed that she had “significant mental health challenges,” without offering any evidence.

Mr. Miller said he had never scalded Ms. Moreno’s chest and stomach by throwing hot water from a skillet at her body, as she has accused him, dismissing the incident as “horseplay in our kitchen” with water that was not boiling.

He also denied her accusation that he held a gun to her head, and he vehemently rejected her charge that he had fractured their daughter’s collarbone and bruised her shoulder.

Mr. Miller, a former staff member for Mr. Trump, blamed his daughter’s injuries on two day care workers.

“If these accusations were true, I would be in jail,” Mr. Miller said, seated in his kitchen and reading haltingly from a script. He contended that the credibility of her assertions was undermined by the fact that he still retains joint custody after years of court battles.

In his livestream, Mr. Miller repeatedly pointed to examples of what he claimed were friendly overtures from Ms. Moreno as proof that she was fabricating the claims of abuse. “If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?” he asked.

Ms. Moreno is seeking to end their shared parenting agreement. The issue is expected to go to court on Nov. 5. Last week, Ms. Moreno filed a restraining order against Mr. Miller, claiming he had harassed and threatened her lawyers.
