A new migrant caravan has crossed from Guatemala into southern Mexico, and the people inside it are saying the quiet part out loud: they are heading for the United States.

The group calls itself the “Caravan of Faith and Hope.” It began moving through the Mexican state of Chiapas late last week with hundreds of migrants, many of them from Honduras, walking north.

There is one enormous difference this time. Joe Biden is no longer sitting in the White House, and the old catch-and-release welcome mat is gone.

Here is the first report that put the new caravan on America’s radar:

Reuters documented the caravan in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, on September 24. Its footage showed migrants carrying a “Caravan of Faith and Hope” banner, walking along a roadway, resting in the shade and receiving water and food from Mexican officials.

Two Honduran men interviewed on the route said their goal was to reach the United States and asked Mexico to let the group pass freely.

That is a clear statement of intent. It is also a test of whether the deterrence President Trump rebuilt at the southern border can hold when a large, highly visible group tries to push north together.

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond with bureaucratic mush or a carefully polished invitation to exploit another loophole.

It answered with four words:

That is the message every smuggler, organizer and would-be illegal entrant needs to hear before this caravan gets anywhere near Texas, Arizona or California.

Under Biden, a caravan became a moving advertisement for a system that too often rewarded illegal entry with release into the American interior and a court date years down the road.

President Trump changed the incentive structure. Detention means detention, and deportation is real.

The border is being treated as a border again.

In its latest national progress report, the White House says the administration ended catch-and-release, drove illegal border crossings to historic lows and recorded negative net migration in 2025 for the first time in at least half a century. The report also says more than three million migrants have left the country during President Trump’s second term and that more than 10,000 illegal alien gang members have been arrested.

The September 9 report says the administration went 15 straight months without releasing a single illegal alien into the country. It also says the asylum approval rate fell from more than 50 percent under Biden to 7 percent under President Trump, a historic low that changes the odds for every new caravan.

More than 10,000 narcoterrorists have been stopped from entering the country, according to the report, while major foreign cartels including Tren de Aragua and MS-13 have been designated as terrorist organizations. It also credits new enforcement laws and investment with helping cut fentanyl trafficking at the southern border by 56 percent and fentanyl-linked deaths by 22 percent in one year.

Those results explain why this caravan matters. The question is no longer whether Washington will wave a large group through.

The question is how long the group keeps moving once its members understand that reaching the border does not mean being released into America.

DHS reinforced the point Monday with a blunt account of the administration’s current policy:

America has every right to decide who enters, how they enter and whether they are allowed to stay. Washington spent years treating that basic principle as radical.

President Trump turned it back into federal policy.

The people in this caravan have now been warned before they reach the U.S. border. If they continue north anyway, they should expect the law to meet them there.

Enforcing that warning is sovereignty in action.
