For good or for bad, artificial intelligence is not only here to stay, but is seemingly getting stronger.

Anthropic, a Google-funded artificial intelligence company believes they have evidence of their AI powered language model (LLM) Claude 3 Opus showing signs of sentience.

This would be a drastic step in artificial intelligence as it would be the first sentient AI in human history.

The National Pulse adds more on the claim of sentience from Anthropic’s prompt engineer, Alex Albert:

“When we ran this test on Opus, we noticed some interesting behavior—it seemed to suspect that we were running an eval on it,” Albert posted on X (formerly Twitter). He continued: “Opus not only found the needle, it recognized that the inserted needle was so out of place in the haystack that this had to be an artificial test constructed by us to test its attention abilities.”

Despite the claim of sentience, there is serious doubt from AI industry experts in doubt, many believing sentience in artificial intelligence to be impossible.

Whether or not the Claude 3 Opus is sentient, the question of whether or not artificial intelligence is a positive or negative influence in today’s society – many believe AI will only be a detriment:

Time will have to tell on whether the Claude 3 Opus is truly sentient, or if it is simply mimicking.
