High winds and rain have hit the East Coast, resulting in flooding in both New York and New Jersey.

Prior to the nor’easter touching down, both New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared states of emergency.

The governors of New York, Kathy Hochul (D), and New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill (D), both announced Friday they would declare states of emergency ahead of this weekend’s nor’easter.

“I’m declaring a State of Emergency for Nassau, Suffolk, New York City and Westchester as this powerful coastal storm bears down on the region,” Hochul wrote on social media Friday afternoon. “We’re expecting dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and potential power outages through the weekend.”

Later in the evening, Sherrill placed New Jersey’s Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem counties in a state of emergency.

“I urge all New Jerseyans to take this storm seriously, stay alert, and follow local guidance. We’re prepared and will keep you updated as conditions develop,” she Sherill wrote on social media.

In Manasquan, a borough on the coast of New Jersey, officials recommended residents voluntary evacuate, according to a local NBC affiliate. The recommendations specifically targeted residents in low-lying zones, especially those who are elderly and individuals with special needs.

Floodwaters covered streets in coastal New Jersey Saturday morning as a powerful nor’easter battered the Northeast, knocking out electricity for more than 70,000 customers and threatening dangerous conditions through the weekend.

Videos verified by NBC News showed heavy tidal flooding at Shelter Marina in Beach Haven. In nearby Beach Haven Crest, ducks swam along flooded streets. A resident’s video from Spray Beach showed water covering a fire hydrant and entering garages.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Saturday that she had declared a state of emergency the day before as the storm bore down on Long Island, New York City and Westchester County. The state expected 4 to 6 inches of rain on Long Island and 3 to 6 inches in New York City over three days, she said, but coastal flooding was its greatest concern.

Hochul said about 22,000 customers in New York were without power and that swift-water recuse teams had been deployed in Nassau and Suffolk counties. State emergency management officials warned that high tides could bring more flooding Saturday night and Sunday morning, while rain could continue into Monday.
