THE OKLAHOMA SUPREME COURT VOTED 7-2 TO REMOVE A 10 COMMANDMENTS MONUMENT ON CAPITOL GROUNDS: “Oklahoma’s highest court said the Ten Commandments chiseled into the 6-foot-tall granite monument, which was privately funded by a Republican legislator, are “obviously religious in nature and are an integral part of the Jewish and Christian faiths.”

The court ruled the statue’s presence violates the state constitution, which bans using public property to promote a religion.

“Quite simply, the Oklahoma Supreme Court got it wrong,” Attorney General Scott Pruitt said, according to the Associated Press.

Pruitt had argued that the monument holds significant historically value – but now it looks as if it could go the way of the Confederate flag.

“The court completely ignored the profound historical impact of the Ten Commandments on the foundation of Western law,” Pruitt said.

According to the AP, there have been plenty of groups working hard to make sure the statue is removed in the short time it’s been up:

“Since the original monument was erected in 2012, several other groups have asked to put up their own monuments on the Capitol grounds. Among them is a group that wants to erect a 7-foot-tall statue that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard.
A Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group, and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster also have made requests.”

The current monument was built in January and has its own history. It’s actually a replica of the original that was destroyed last October after someone drove a car into it.

Pruitt plans to appeal the ruling and Rep. Mike Ritze, R-Okla., who funded $10,000 for the monument’s construction, will back him.
