President Trump has officially made Secretary of State Marco Rubio his permanent national security adviser.
According to The Hill, Rubio is the first individual to hold both positions at the same time since Henry Kissinger.
“President Donald Trump signed a commission formally making Rubio his national security adviser, three administration officials confirmed to Fox News Digital. Rubio had served in the role on an interim basis since May 2025,” Fox News wrote.

Rubio had previously been serving in the role in an acting capacity following the departure of former national security adviser and current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
Waltz left the position more than a year ago in May 2025 after he became embroiled in the scandal known as “Signalgate,” where he mistakenly added The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief to a private group chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal in which high-ranking officials — including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President Vance — discussed military plans against the Houthis in Yemen.
ADVERTISEMENTRubio has been praised by many in the administration, including Trump, as someone who is able to juggle multiple responsibilities.
“When I have a problem, I call up Marco. He gets it solved,” the president said last year after he tapped Rubio to replace Waltz in an acting capacity.
Rubio, along with Vice President JD Vance, is considered a potential successor to Trump in the 2028 presidential election.
Most GOP presidential primary polls have Vance and Rubio in the top spots.
Rubio said earlier this month that he currently has no plans to launch a White House run.
“I don’t know what the future holds, but I have no plans at this time,” Rubio said in an interview with Colombian news station RCN, according to The Hill.
“I’m not a candidate for anything right now. And I’m 100 percent focused on my job, and I have to be because I have two jobs,” he added.

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) are the strongest performing Democrats when put up against the two Trump administration officials.
Ossoff, who made headlines over the weekend for insinuating President Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp were romantically entangled, holds a 3-point edge over Rubio (47%-44%) and a 5-point advantage against Vance (49%-44%).
