Even as he navigates a military operation aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, President Donald Trump is alerting Americans to an even more immediate threat posed by another potentially hostile nation.

Despite establishing cautious ties with Kim Jong Un, President Trump was clear in his latest statements that North Korea is a global wild card with dozens of nuclear bombs in its arsenal.

According to The Hill:

President Trump warned Wednesday that North Korea has “57 very powerful nuclear weapons,” comments that come after he complimented the country a few days ago.

“The fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons,” Trump said during an event at the White House, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“Should’ve never allowed it to happen. They should’ve never allowed it, if I were president, I wouldn’t have allowed it. But he’s got them. I get along with him very well,” the president added.

Trump met with the North Korean leader in his first term and in 2019 took an historic step, literally, into North Korea with Kim Jung Un at his side. Trumphas repeatedly broadcast his friendship with the dictator as a way to ensure the North Korean leader behaves in a way that’s favorable to America.

Kim Yo Jong, the leader’s younger sister, told North Korean state media on Wednesday that the country’s position toward the U.S. had not changed despite the scaled-back military exercises, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“The head of our state personally holds good memories and feelings toward Trump,” she said. “Nevertheless the U.S.’s hostile policy remains unchanged.”
